Session Title: Global Factors Influencing Volunteer Engagement

Session Title: Grounding Your Practice: The Volunteer Experience Framework

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how to adopt the Volunteer Experience Framework to modernize the Volunteer Engagement Strategy
  • Assess the current state and build a case for support to invest in Volunteer Engagement
  • Develop strategies to nurture a memorable experience for the volunteers and staff working with volunteers

Target Audience: This session is best suited for volunteer engagement professionals who are new to the profession (1-3 years) and practitioners who are interested in modernizing volunteer engagement.

Session Title: Reimagining Volunteer Redirection for Sustainable Community Impact

Learning Objectives: 

  • Apply redirection strategies at each stage of the volunteer engagement cycle (with a focus on opportunities in the planning, recruitment, orientation and training, and recognition phases).
  • Develop strengths-based redirection messaging that aligns with volunteer motivations and community needs.
  • Prepare for community-centric redirection conversations that foster transparency and trust.
  • Meaningfully steward individuals and groups who are redirected from volunteer service.

This session would most benefit:

  • Leaders of volunteers with a strong understanding of the volunteer engagement cycle
  • Leaders of volunteers with more than one year of experience in the field
  • Leaders of volunteers from all non-profit subsectors
  • Leaders of volunteers studying for or renewing their CVA credential


Bio:
Over the past 25 years, Erin Spink has gained internationa
l recognition as a speaker, writer and trainer in Volunteer
Engagement. Her work includes the only academic research quantifying the concept of “volunteer engagement”,
multiple chapters in the 
CCVA accreditation textbook and regular contributions to the Engage journal as co-author of the Points of View articles and co-editor of the Ethics column.

Bio:
Shaminda Perera, MEd. is a Volunteer Engagement Strategist. He is the creator of the Volunteer Experience Framework and consults and writes on Volunteer Engagement based on the framework. He has been involved with Volunteer Engagement since 2011 and currently leads Volunteer Engagement at the City of Mississauga. Formerly, he was with Volunteer Canada from 2022-24 and with Volunteer MBC from 2011-22. Shaminda is a strong advocate for modernizing the volunteerism movement.

Bio:
Jessica is a volunteer engagement thought leader who helps organizations build trust, create impact, and inspire belonging. She is the recipient of the 2021 Alison Caird Young Leader Award in recognition of her leadership and excellence in volunteer engagement and the recipient of the 2023 VMPC Exemplary Leader Impact Award in recognition of her contributions to the field as a mentor, leader, trainer, and advocate.

Jessica earned her CVA credential in April 2023 and has facilitated Fleming College’s Volunteer Management: Spectrum of Engagement course since May 2022. She has held professional volunteer and community engagement roles at Crohn's and Colitis Canada, Pathways to Education Canada, the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Volunteer Toronto, and WWF-Canada. ​
