Serving With, Not To: Understanding Power Dynamics in Volunteer-Community Relationships - Plus Q&A, with Breauna Dorelus
Join us Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 12 PM EST
Join Breauna Dorelus as she introduces the 5 Phases of Co-Dreaming, its practices, and what it looks like to begin the journey wherever you are. Half of the session will be an introduction to the framework with the other half centered in reflection and Q&A.
Presenter Bio:
Breauna Dorelus is the Founder and Cause Consultant at Connecting the Cause, a consultancy dedicated to dismantling harmful volunteer practices implemented by organizations and volunteers specifically towards Black and brown communities. She started her career as an AmeriCorps member and spent 10+ years in various volunteer management roles in humanitarian aid efforts, refugee resettlement and ministry. Breauna believes in community inclusion in all aspects of the volunteer process, and has dedicated her work to ensuring that service is centered around co-dreaming and not harmful charity. For the past 8+ years as a consultant, she's served as a keynote, speaker, session and webinar host, trainer, facilitator, and builder. Breauna has worked on multiple projects helping co-create ethos, philosophy, and practices for those who wish to walk alongside others. Her heart work is connected to seeing others have moments of reckoning and reimagination as they move from charity to Co-Dreaming. In her spare time, she loves playing with dinosaurs with her 4 and 3 year old, thrifting, and having a hot matcha latte.
Volunteer Planning for large-scale events: ensuring a smooth volunteer experience at multi-site and multi-day events with Alexandra Cherry Wednesday, May 6th, 2026 at 12 PM ET
Learning Outcomes:
Alexandra was the Senior Manager of Volunteer Services at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games. She was responsible for recruiting, training and retraining over 3,000 volunteers to ensure the smooth delivery and running of the Games in support of over 4,000 athletes, playing 16 different sports and with volunteers in 60 different venues - across 9 action packed days. She has also been the Volunteer Manager for Nocturne: Art at Night which is a one night event where most volunteers have to find their location independently and are volunteering at night and usually in the cold - and supporting the 100+ artists and projects the over 65,000 people who come out to enjoy the contemporary art festival. This presentation will aim to answer the following questions: How can you seek to ensure a positive volunteer experience, when you will likely never meet many of the volunteers who have committed to your program? What are the logistical barriers to a positive volunteer experience for all involved in a one off or yearly event?
Alexandra specializes in helping non-profits grow their volunteer programs and ensuring that they are sustainable, supportive and thoughtful. She also has extensive experience in large scale event management, notably with the 2023 North American Indigenous Games and Nocturne: Art at Night (Halifax's version of Nuit Blanche). She believes in the power of volunteering and events in bringing people together and building community, which lead to her starting the Halifax Volunteer Fair with Halifax Public Libraries in 2025. She founded Bienvenu Consulting in 2024, which is named after her mother's family. It is a Halifax based consultancy that focuses on sustainable volunteer strategy development, volunteer and staff training, event strategy and planning.
